Foyer opens a school as part of its humanitarian project in Nepal
The inauguration of the new school in Bethanchowk, Nepal, marks the completion of a humanitarian project in which Foyer Group has been involved since 2020, in close collaboration with the NGO Aide à l’Enfance de l’Inde et du Népal (AEIN) and with the support of the Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The objectives of this educational project were to rebuild a school, to equip several schools with furniture, to promote entrepreneurship, particularly among women, and to raise awareness among the local population about the education of children.
During a one-week stay in Nepal, Amira Hellal and Nathalie Hanus, two colleagues involved in the CSR Humanitarian working group at Foyer accompanied AEIN representatives on an unforgettable trip. From fields to mountains, from homes to school classes, they had the opportunity to meet the members of the rural community of Bethanchowk, to share moments of life and culture, but also to see the benefits of the humanitarian project to which many volunteers contributed.
They were able
to inaugurate the new school in Bethanchowk, eight years to the day after the devastating
earthquake that destroyed everything in the region. A few days later, they visited
the cooperative set up for a thousand women who live from agriculture and
support their families as their husbands have left abroad to find work. Our
colleagues were happy to give these women the keys to a truck that will allow them
to sell their fruit and vegetables directly on the markets.
On the initiative of colleagues involved in the Foyer Humanitarian Working Group, all the Group’s staff mobilized to raise funds for this project, in particular through « payroll giving », a regular micro-donation on salary, which complemented the donations made by Foyer. And to illustrate the project in an original way, Foyer and AEIN called on the artist Thomas Iser to co-create an original work of art called Dream Catcher, along with the children who benefit from the project in Nepal and the children of Foyer’s employees in Luxembourg. Wishing to support AEIN and to be able to exhibit this work in its premises, Foyer Group acquired Dream Catcher by offering a donation of €20,000 to the NGO. A replica of this painting also decorates the outside of the Nepalese school, so that no one forgets the history of this beautiful collaboration.
